Although I'm not in Evansville all that often, I've been to Taj Mahal plenty of times.

I love Indian food and have many restaurants where I live. So, with only one restaurant here in Evansville, I wasn't expecting anything extraordinary. Luckily, I've been pleasantly surprised by Taj Mahal and regularly dine there.

The first thing I'll mention is that the spice level is a bit higher than at other Indian restaurants I've been to. Keep this in mind while you are ordering or you may find your food a bit too spicy.

As with most Indian restaurants, there are tons of vegetarian options. Some of the ones that Taj Mahal does best include the Dal Makhani,
Punjabi Curry, Dal Tadka and Aloo Gobi. They also have a selection of chaat items in the appetizers, these are very good and are a great start to the meal.

We've done lunch buffet, dinner and carryout on various occasions. The food quality in all instances has been well above par across the menu. The buffet has a somewhat limited selection, caters to vegetarians and non-vegetarians and also keeps all the items pretty fresh. I'd say the quality of the buffet seemed to be similar to the dine-in experience for us.

The interior is really clean, bright and spacious with the ability to accommodate larger groups easily. There are high ceilings, plenty of windows and a luxurious (non-functional) bar. The service is polite and the wait times for food are very reasonable. Of particular note, they are incredibly accommodating for food modifications. As an example, my husband was craving aloo gobi without the gobi one night and the staff obliged without question.

The food here is solidly good and anytime we have a craving for Indian food, Taj Mahal always hits the spot.

I used to eat here quite often before moving away a few years ago. Been back twice since back in town and will never go back. The lunch buffet has not changed in years but there is not any flavor anymore. All the food is bland. The chicken tikka is especially bad and is nowhere near what it used to be.

Food is okay! I would rather say it is worth what they charge for. Not awesome but also not bad.

However the main problem that me and my girlfriend faced was lack of good service. The waiters would not bother to check on you (in our case it was just us who were left unattended while we were there). Next they would not care if the glasses are empty!!!

I love to eat culturally and this is phenomenal Indian cuisine! I've done the lunch buffet countless times and even done some takeout. Yummm! Lamb vindaloo is so rich and warms your insides on a cold Indiana day.

Taj Mahal used to be a very good Indian restaurant. It isn't any more. Inexplicably, it is still open. (Notice how old all the good reviews are.)
